Bitwise's Matt Hougan has identified BlackRock's initiative to tokenize its iShares ETF lineup as a pivotal narrative capable of steering the crypto market out of its bearish phase. The proposal, currently under discussion with the SEC, aims to migrate traditional ETFs onto blockchain infrastructure, enabling programmable, round-the-clock settlement and DeFi integration.

BlackRock CFO Martin Small acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding the timeline, stating completion could range from 90 days to 12 months. The move WOULD transform iShares ETFs into collateralizable assets within decentralized finance protocols, potentially unlocking new liquidity avenues.

Market observers view this institutional embrace of tokenization as a watershed moment for layer-1 blockchains and DeFi ecosystems. The development signals growing convergence between traditional finance and blockchain technology, with 24/7 tradability and composability emerging as key value propositions.
